What is Neural Therapy and how can it help you with pain
More and more patients arrive at the clinic asking about neural therapy: they have heard it can help when pain will not quite go away, but they are not sure what it involves. Here we explain it calmly and with sound medical judgement: what it is, how it works and what someone considering it can expect.

What exactly is neural therapy
Neural therapy is a regulatory medicine technique born in Germany in the early 20th century, from the observations of the Huneke brothers. It consists of applying microinjections of procaine — a classic local anaesthetic — at very low concentrations into specific points of the body: scars, nerve pathways, reflex zones.
Its goal is not to «numb» the pain, but something more ambitious: to give the nervous system the chance to reorganise itself. Neural therapy speaks of «interference fields»: areas of chronic irritation — an old scar, an area that suffered an infection, a point of sustained tension — that keep sending alarm signals long after the original problem has passed.
How it works: calming an irritated nervous system
The autonomic nervous system is the network that silently coordinates almost everything the body does on its own: circulation, digestion, muscle tone, inflammation. When an area remains chronically irritated, it can sustain altered reflexes even at a distance from the original point.
Procaine, applied in the right place, briefly interrupts that altered transmission. It is like restarting a circuit that had become stuck: by silencing the alarm signal for a few minutes, the system has the chance to return to a more orderly way of working. That is why, at times, pain improves far from the treated point.
In which cases it can help
At the clinic we use it, within a comprehensive plan, in situations like these:
- Chronic neck and lower back pain that does not quite respond to the usual treatments.
- Recurrent headaches and migraines.
- Sciatica and radiating pain.
- Persistent discomfort around scars or after surgery.
- Functional disturbances — digestive, sleep-related — linked to an overloaded nervous system.
Like any medical tool, it is not a universal solution: it complements, it does not replaceconventional treatment, and its indication always depends on an individual assessment.
What a session at the clinic is like
Everything starts with a meticulous clinical history: we look for the origin, not just the symptom. Scars, medical history, operations… everything counts. The technique itself is then simple: superficial microinjections with a very fine needle, which most patients describe as small pinches. The session is short and, in the hands of a trained physician, it is a technique with decades of use in Europe and a very favourable safety profile.
How many sessions are needed? It depends on the case: some people notice changes from the first few, while chronic conditions call for more persistence. Being honest about that variability is part of sound medical judgement.
Three questions we are often asked
Does it hurt? Very little: the needle is extremely fine and the injection superficial. The vast majority tolerate it without any problem.
Is it compatible with my medication? Yes. Neural therapy is integrated with the treatment you are already following; medication is never withdrawn without medical judgement.
What if my pain goes back many years? That is precisely where the approach of looking for the origin makes most sense. Old pain is not, in itself, untreatable pain.
If pain has been ruling your day-to-day life for too long, perhaps it is time to look at it from another angle. On the neural therapy in Valencia page you will find how we apply it at the clinic, and on the pain treatmentpage, the complete approach that goes with it.
