Integrative Medicine in Valencia: what it is, how it differs and how it can help you
More and more patients in Valencia are looking for medicine that listens to them, looks at their whole case and does not limit itself to prescribing for the symptom. That medicine exists, has a name and decades of track record: Integrative Medicine.

What exactly is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative Medicine combines the best of conventional medicine (rigorous diagnosis, tests, evidence-based treatments) with complementary therapies of proven usefulness, such as naturopathic medicine, acupuncture or ozone therapy. Its fundamental principle: treating the whole person, not just the disease.
It is important to understand what it is NOT: it is not rejecting conventional medicine or replacing necessary treatments. It is integrating, with sound medical judgement, every available tool so that the patient improves.
How it differs from a conventional consultation
- Time and listening: the first visit is a comprehensive assessment of your history, habits and lifestyle, not a seven-minute consultation.
- Finding the origin: the goal is not just to relieve the symptom, but to understand why it appears and act on the cause.
- Fewer side effects: when the case allows it, well-tolerated treatments are prioritised to avoid unnecessary chronic medication.
- The patient takes part: nutrition, rest, exercise and stress management are part of the treatment.
How to choose a good integrative physician
The word «integrative» is in fashion, and it pays to choose wisely. Three things you should always verify: that they are a licensed physician (in our case, with the Official Medical College of Valencia), that they have accredited training in the therapies they apply, and that they talk about complementing conventional medicine, never abandoning it.
In Valencia, Dr. Rafael Torres has practised this approach since 1982 — even before the term became popular — combining his practice with university teaching as co-director of the Master’s in Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture and Homeopathy at the University of Valencia.
Who is it indicated for?
Especially for chronic conditions that never quite resolve (persistent pain, digestive problems, fatigue), for those who want to age healthily, and for anyone looking to prevent illness and care for themselves with real medical support.
