Acupuncture: myths and truths explained by an accredited physician

By Dr. Rafael Torres · July 2026 · Integrative Medicine in Valencia

Few techniques raise as many questions as acupuncture. After more than four decades applying it in practice, these are the honest answers to the myths we hear most often in Valencia.

Los dos libros del Dr. Rafael Torres, el criterio médico frente a los mitos

«Acupuncture hurts» — False (or almost)

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, much finer than those of an injection. You will usually feel a slight, momentary prick; in fact, most patients relax during the session and some even doze off.

«Anyone can apply it» — Be careful with this one

Here is the most important truth in this article: acupuncture applied by a physician is not the same as acupuncture applied by someone without healthcare training. A physician knows the anatomy, assesses your whole case, detects when acupuncture is NOT the answer and guarantees clinical protocol: sterile single-use needles and rigorous hygiene. At our practice, Dr. Torres is accredited in Acupuncture by the Official Medical College of Valencia.

«It is just placebo» — The most debated question

Acupuncture is the subject of constant research, with particularly interesting results in the field of pain, where health bodies in several countries consider it a complementary option. Our position is that of the prudent physician: it is used where clinical experience and research support it — mainly pain, contractures, headaches, stress and insomnia —, integrated into a complete medical plan and always evaluating your response.

«It works for everything» — Also false

Beware of anyone presenting any technique as a universal remedy. Acupuncture is a valuable tool within a bigger toolbox: Integrative Medicine. The honesty of telling you when something is not indicated is part of sound medical judgement.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on the problem and how long-standing it is. At the first assessment consultation an indicative plan is proposed and adjusted according to your progress: no closed promises, with real follow-up.
